Earthdance hates Psytrance
Been busy this week and have come back and taken stock of the monster I have created
.
I have usually gone to the prayers for peace in the morning of earthdance and either gone to work before making it back to the party (damm shop) or gone home for some breakfast before going to the party and I have noticed that each year it is getting more and more yukky by the time I get there. If it getting squashed into Albert Park I am simply not going. Its funny but what bugged me the most last year (besides the fence and the fact you could not take your own beverages in, and the fluro munted pratts) was the mess everyone left behind. I have not seen that amount of garbage left on the dance floor for a very very long time. I suspect the only message being spread here is come to a free party and get fucked off our brain and behave like inconsiderate morons.
I really like the idea of a breakaway Earthdance for the doofers. OK I am selfish but the idea of spending the day dancing with lovely like minded individuals really appeals to me.

That's clearly not true of course. I assume the Saturday may be a council thing as the park has to be returned to normal by Monday morning. A lot of areas are subject to council and police approval. The finish time last year was part of the safety plan to encourage people to wind down etc. As we were on top of the hill, the DnB stage and the psy stage unfortunately were the first 2 to finish up.
The Beyond Boundaries stage will be the last stage this year to finish I believe (don't quote me on this)
Despite a mistake of administration that actually works! *Nods*

commercialisation
looses it's appeal and true meaning. Yeh I can see why the true doofers wouldn't want to go. I could just imagine the outrage in SEQ if ED was moved to the showgrounds. Should it be about maximizing how much (that gets really donated to charity after running costs) ED seems to be going down the path of - anyway LOST.
Simple solution break away and keep it underground away from promotional hype from net. email list and keep it minimal (word of mouth). if the party makes a profit then make a contribution to a charity and post the receipt on a public forum such as this. still keeping the ED tradition etc hold hands prayer for peace etc if that's what the punters want. ED organisation only hold the rights to the name - they don't own you.

yeah the rubbish left behind for the last few years when i have been is pretty disgraceful.... kind of negates the whole idea of "EARTHDANCE"?!

It wont be long before the is a "compulsory" donation methinks. It reeks of newtown fextival. The council has a lot to do with what is fucked about it (fencing, extra security aqnd and sniffer dogs). unfortunately the message is long lost and it is just another event.

as if the psy community ever got the message!
if they did get the message of "unity" and "tolerance/acceptance" and "peace" why do they act like such bratish, immature little kids squealing now that some other kids that they dont like get to party under the earthdance moniker???
maybe if they did get the message, we'd see some leadership, some sheparding of the new flock so that the new attendee's understand what earthdance is all about. How many psytrancers have volunteered help eh ?
but no. they instead choose to whinge about how the event isn't psy enough and how they want to pray for peace and unity by ripping the psytrance out of the festival and putting it into the bush.
the message hasnt been lost, because it was never found.

^^ I think many have the message but are too jaded to try. Also, theres a certain fear of the ridiculous antics of psy heads which in the eyes of the general public make the messages we present invalid to them.

All the more reason to create a space where people can "Get the message".
Ripping Psy trance out of the festival??? Whoever said anything about that. If people wanna listen to cheese or tech house, or commercial Brazil trance thats fine, they can go to the park. Let them have their fun. But whats wrong with having another party for the Psy heads, who may also wish to have the circle? Some may think its a waste of time, thats fine but why should those who feel the circle is important be ignored?
We had quality psy and quality circle ED's, now its a commercialised shmozzle.
How about attempting to create a real sacred space. One which the "psy scene" has experience creating. And at the very least allowing 'everyone' the opportunity to 'acknowledge' the reason for the 'Earthdance' gathering.
Obviously the message has been lost on even the promoters who fail to create the prayer for peace circle.
The message has been ignored and belittled by people who overlook the importance of the "Ritual".

Dear god, Atreyu, you're on to a winner there. You know what you should do, go and do exactly that. Do it. Everyone else on this board who thinks the same, send Atreyu a PM and help out. You guys can stop hanging out on this thread badmouthing Earthdance and go actually do something. How's that for a plan? Bit of positivity! Bit of proactiveness! Less talk, more action!

Not afraid of the big calls are you.
Occasional festivals like Rainbow Serpent and Royal Doof are ok!
It's the "how" and "why" that personally makes it contentious for me!
Edit: Please note I actually meant Doof festival not Royal doof.

I hate to have to join in the whole islam bashing game but I spoke to some Turkish (doof capital of the islamic world) mates the other day who just got back from visiting friends over there...
They said people are getting a bit freaked out about the resurgence of conservative islamic rule and are basically wishing they could get the fuck of there before it go's the way of Iran. They said the girls are feeling a lot of pressure to 'don the veil' and stop having opinions and all that peace loving goodness.

Dont be racist. You can still pray for peace in a hijab.

Im not racist. Racist would be to suggest that the obvious solution to the problem of islamic men getting an uncontrollable hard on every time they see female skin is to let the women remain uncovered but for the men to be blindfolded and led around by their mother.
or is that sexist?

I agree with Tom. Less talk on forums and more action would be great!!
The psytrance scene is the roots of this festival. Instead of judging someone because they wear fluro and get off their face, why not get amongst it and help to make a change. We all started out wearing fluro and getting off it (I know I did anyway), so is it so bad when kids do the same. They may be missing the point, but don't most youths these days. It's up to the people that do know what it's all about to get amongst it and make a change. This is a community festival and runs on volunteer action (yes volunteer, yes action!!)
I offered to take any suggestions to the board to see what we (the psy scene) could do to teach the punters what it's all about. We have a great vehicle to deliver a message or make change but nobody seems very keen to get involved. Anyone is welcome to help out!!!!
Wouldn't it be great if we could have 20,000 chilled healthy people that did not litter, did not insite violence, discussed world issues, pitched in for charity and partied happily together?
It's hard to create this when the like minded people would rather piss off back to the bush to talk about what's wrong with the world. Talking about whats wrong doesn't help shit, unless you want to act on what's being discussed. I'd love to see some psy trancers open up to other crowds and other music for the day. Kinda like Earthdance ambassadors helping to open the eyes of others with an ultimate goal to make the world (or at least Sydney) a happier and more sustainable place to live.
This might sound like a wank but there is only a handful of volunteers trying to make this event happen. This is barely enough to make sure we meet safety requirements and deliver a festival with half decent tunes and production. Trying to collect donations and deliver a true message is only going to happen when more of the community get involved. Raising a few hundred dollars form a bush party is hardly going to change the world. This doesn't mean you have to volunteer to collect donations (although this would be fantastic!!!!). Just reaching out to some of the lost munters or making a worthwhile suggestion to kids on the day could be a start. Something as simple as picking up some rubbish in front of others can get people thinking and can insite change.
Fuckin hell.....I aint got the answers, but what is the prayer for peace going to do if you do it on your own with a couple of hundred friends in the bush. This doesn't reach the masses, and if you don't reach the masses, you aint gunna change shit! This is a large city we live and an even bigger world that this city is part of.
If anyone reading this forum has any suggestions that may help the cause, I'd love to read about em. There's still time to make an application for a market stall. Market stalls a great way to help deliver the whole Earthdance message (it's not just 1 message, it can be anything...you know the deal) We did have stalls last year that provided great information on sustainability, animal rights, human rights etc etc Some more of this would go a long way to changing the demographic that visit us in future years.
Just some shit to think about (or take action on
